Winter is in full swing here in South Korea, and we are finding new ways to create during these cold months. We recently started our days with early morning walks, all bundled and ready to explore the frozen rice fields behind our apartment. It’s created an opportunity to explore more this season, especially with all the snow this year. Inspired by Pinterest, I gathered a small list of items needed to create effortless snowflake crafts from coffee filters to use as suncatchers. Little did I know it would inspire a second craft using the paper scrapes from the first project.
Effortless Snowflake Crafts: Coffee filter snowflakes
Items Needed for Snowflakes
- Magic markers (washable)
- White coffee filters
- Spray bottle with water
- A wipeable surface or tablecloth
- Scissors
- Hole punch (optional)
- String or fishing line (optional)
- Laminator with laminating sheets (optional)
How to Create Snowflakes
- Start by coloring the coffee filters. They won’t need to be filled in completely. Use as many colors as desired.
- On a wipeable surface, place the colored coffee filters and spray with the water bottle until just saturated. So the colors run, giving almost a tie-dye effect.
- Let the filters air dry completely.
- Once dried fold the filter in half, then half again, then in to 3 or four equal sections (see below).
- Cut snowflakes to preference. I like to cut alternating triangles and circles.
- Laminate the snowflakes (optional) to increase the longevity.
- Use the hole punch and fishing line to hang snowflakes or clothes pins to attach to displays.
- Make sure to save the leftover filter clippings for the following craft.

Effortless Snowflake Crafts : Paper Prism Snowflakes
We created a second seasonal craft with the leftover scraps from the coffee filter snowflakes, construction paper, and a little glue. I drew out the snowflakes with a ruler and pencil, then followed the design with the glue. The girls could attach the paper pieces in any fashion they saw fit. These turned out so cute, and the girls loved creating them!
